Road Kill July 23, 2010

This morning we took a ride to see if we could see any more elk in the same area we had seen so many the other day. We were sad to see that one of the big beautiful elk we love to see was laying on the side of the road. Last night we heard the volunteer rescue and fire department go out and when we saw the elk on the side of the road we wondered if that was where they were going. Hitting an elk with your vehicle is going to do a lot of damage to the car and could cause very serious injuries to the occupants.

Tonight we went to Luna to see the activities they were doing for Pioneer Day's. They start on Friday with a street fair that got moved inside because of rain and finishes on Sunday after church. Tomorrow they have a parade, BBQ, rodeo and dance.
On our way back to Alpine we came across a very large herd of elk. Some females and at least one with a large rack of antlers. I tried to get pictures but the camera was not cooperating and so I did not get any pictures. They were the closest we had seen and were right at the sign that says Alpine east of town less than a mile from my place. It is such a wonderful sight to see and I wish I could have shared them with you.

July 21, 2010 an AWSOME day!!!

The 20th went out with a loud thunder storm and lots of rain. Today started sunny but we had some real hard rain on our way to Springerville. I did not take my camera and that was a BIG mistake. We saw 3 elk on our way there and on the way back we saw a whole herd. Well, I did take some pictures with my phone but they are not as good as the camera. We got home and got the camera and then headed back to see if they were still there to take some pictures and they were. There were even more and it is an undescribable feeling to see so many. It is a high that doesn't need drugs and is just amazing. I took some video and so put some the the still shots and video on here. My cousin Joanne and my niece Stephanie are here so they also got to see the miracle of this wildlife. In the pictures you can also see some of the beautiful wild flowers. I hope you enjoy them. It is not as exciting as seeing them in person but I am happy to share! The car is my driver, Joanne :-). There were babies in the herd and we could see at least one male with the beginnings of antlers with velvet on them. It looked like a parking lot tonight with so many people stopped to see the show of elk!

July 20th, 2010

We went several days without seeing any type of wildlife except for a few squirrels and birds. There are many birds visible outside the window and they enjoy eating the bird seed in the feeder I hung and the humming birds are fighting over the humming bird nector in another feeder.

We have had a little bit of rain each evening or late afternoon and they are so wonderful and much needed. The highest we have recorded getting here is 89 degrees. The cool breeze is so nice.

Today we were able to see 3 female elk and so here they are. They are so good to just keep doing what they are doing while I stop the car and get out to take their pictures. Sometimes it looks like they are posing just for me. I hope you enjoy seeing them.

Seeing Elk

One of the things I enjoy doing is driving around and looking for wildlife. These are some of the pictures of elk I have seen in June and so far in July of these wonderful animals called elk. Some are bulls and some are cows. I plan to post pictures to this blog and also my feelings of what I see and do up here.
It rains almost everyday and it is so green here compared to the desert that I have lived in for the last 57 yrs of my life.
Yesterday for a couple of hours and today at the lake my cousin Joanne (visiting from Tucson) went to a fly fishing class. So fun to find out a new way to fish.
